capsule wardrobe planning

After last week’s #fakeituntilyoumakeit Link Up, I was very excited to start planning my first ever Capsule Wardrobe.

{How someone gets to be 43 without ever trying to create a capsule is a mystery, but anyway…}

With a love of colour, and pattern mixing, I thought that planning a simple (and pared back) capsule wardrobe would be a new challenge for me.
New challenges, and trying something different, is always a good idea.

Time to get stuck in!

The Capsule Wardrobe ‘Rules’

5 simple rules apply to choosing pieces for your capsule wardrobe…

  1. CLIMATE. The climate where you live (or travel) is the main factor you need to consider when choosing your capsule pieces. It doesn’t matter how much you love those white linen trousers, they won’t get a lot of wear if you’re knee deep in snow!
  2. LIFESTYLE. Getting real when it comes to your lifestyle is essential. Evening gowns may make you smile, but they have no place in your capsule if you spend most of your time either; chasing the kids around, walking the dog or getting the messages in (Scottish for food shopping)… unless, of course, you love to make a bold statement!
  3. COLOUR. Make sure your capsule contains colours that make you happy. Just because every capsule wardrobe you see online has black, grey and navy as its key pieces doesn’t mean YOURS has to! Pick your preferred colours, patterns and textures. Leopard print and stripes your thing? Go for it!
  4. COMFORT. The level of comfort you need (and want) from your clothes is so important. You won’t want to wear uncomfortable and unsuitable clothes. Tailoring is great, but totally impractical if you need to move around a lot in your daily life… for whatever reason.
  5. MIX & MATCH. How well the individual pieces Mix and Match with each other is crucial. This doesn’t mean you have to be boring or even ‘classic’ with your combinations… the mixing and matching only has to work for YOU, and your personal taste. No one else. If you love teal with coral then do it. Leopard print with florals? Go for it! It’s your capsule wardrobe after all.

The Pieces

The pieces in my first capsule were very easy to choose.
{Almost too easy… which always makes me worry!}

I had decided to pick a specific type of capsule (autumn season, work based) so the items seemed to jump out of the wardrobe at me.

At this point it’s important to note that (for me) a capsule wardrobe does NOT include the following;

  • Underwear, including ‘secret’ thermal layers that are not part of the outfit.
  • Hosiery.
  • Jewellery.
  • Belts.
  • Gloves & Hats.
  • Waterproof coats, wellies or umbrellas!

My Autumn Work Capsule

My capsule wardrobe consists of 37 pieces, including;

3 pairs of shoes
2 pairs of ankle boots
…. and I wanted more!

2 trousers
1 culottes
2 skirts

2 dresses

4 fine knitted tops
3 polo neck tops (great for layering too)
2 shirts

1 wrapover cardigan
2 classic crew-necked cardigans
1 long sleeveless cardigan/waistcoat

Coats & Jackets
1 short leather jacket
2 coats, both warm, one slightly heavier.
1 trench

(narrowing it down to five was very hard!)
1 large
2 medium
2 small

2 lighter weight
2 wool.

37 items in total

Job done!
No more worrying about what to wear.
Hello stress-free mornings.
Goodbye to standing staring blankly into the wardrobe, wondering what to put with what.
Hello simple life.
Much more detail on that tomorrow!

Now it’s Over to You…

Now it’s time for the main focus of this post.

It’s time to get linking your posts and images.

Last week Jennie’s outfit’s colour combination really caught my eye.
I love this deep petrol/teal colour mixed with the coral red.
